Earth Day

We watched a Video: Mr. Cool Can. Students learned about the recycling process and waste management systems.

We talked about the 4 R's, yes that's right there is a new R out there called - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. By saying no to plastic bags at the grocery store, so no to plastic packing by using jars and containers to shop, by not taking a straw or other single use items we can already impact the affects of harmful pollution on our planet.

Student's then wrote an "Earth Day Pledge" and signed it with a hand print
\

We finished the day with a mystery picture with our 100's chart, Students had to color in the numbers with the correct corresponding colour to unveil the picture ---Psst it says "I Love Earth"

Beach Party!

Getting the water balloons ready, also got a beach ball for some language games

We did a relay race with a beach theme- Students had to spin an item, then race back to their team to say a word under that item. If they got it wrong they got a squirt of water :D

Ready for our co-operative game- Balloon toss. It promotes team work, perseverance, communication and many other good social skills.

Lastly, take a look at our very hungry readers~! I've challenged my high level readers to reach 100

Wacky Wednesday

Today was filled with laughter and smiles as students enjoyed jokes and riddles!

We have finished another round of Daily 5 and are starting on our next- I have sent unfinished work from last round home to be completed ASAP.

ART: We have learned about Joan Miro and his style of art called Abstract. To make our own abstract art, students each drew an object on the paper (we did Easter/Spring themed). We then used rulers to lay out a 3 inch grid. They chose 4 colors and got busy. The rules were:
1. Change colors every time you come to a space/object
2. Try not to have the same color side by side.
3. Use the 4 coloring techniques: solid, circles, stipple, blank (see picture below)

We learned a new technique called stippling

Camp Out Day

A great day was enjoyed by our class, camping out on the floor of our classroom with our fake campfire, sure was fun!

We did a mini-science experiment with Glow sticks:

How do glow sticks work? Essentially, you begin the chemical reaction when you bend the glow stick. Bending the stick breaks a thin tube inside the stick and allows a hydrogen peroxide solution and a fluorescent dye to mix together.

We talked about Exothermic and Endothermic reactions:

We made a prediction about wither different temperatures would effect the chemical reactions. The students then placed one cracked glow stick in ice water and one in hot. We waited 5 mins in the dark to watch what happened.

We discovered that the stick in the hot water glowed a lot brighter and we concluded it was because of an Endothermic reaction- The stick absorbed the heat and this caused the chemicals in the stick to react stronger/quicker.

We then had a traditional Canadian camping treat (it wouldn't be camping without S'mores!)

We then camped out in the Library with our reading buddies!

It was also feeding day for our worm bin! Two lucky students got to help out and place the worm food into the bin!

Crazy Hair Day

What a fun day to read and spend time with our Crazy Hair!

We read the book and did some story sequencing:

Then we had some fun during Library time- Taking a class photo :D

In Social Studies we have been looking at careers and making Google Slide presentations

We have been learning some important computer skills; doing online research, choosing the best video to depict our topic, How to insert video and pictures into a presentation, using keyboard short cuts CRTL + C = COPY/ CRTL + V = PASTE / Shift + 2 = @, practicing our typing

Here is my EXAMPLE presentation that I showed the students

Here are our guiding questions for our career research and information that we will be including in our presentations:

1. What is a day in the life of this job like?
2. Does this job require special training/skills?
3. What do people like/dislike about this type of job?
4. Can you see yourself doing this work and being happy at it? Why?
5. What is the salary or pay?
6. What are the educational requirements?
7. What are some interesting facts you discovered while researching?
