Feb 1st

Continuing to plant our seeds and observe them, we are exploring what environmental factors change the growth of plants (sun, no sun, water, no water).

I will get more photo's tomorrow! Some have already started to sprout ..... :D

Math review is in progress, we will be doing our assessment on Monday 100%. Please help your child review by using the links provided in Jan 30th Blog post.

Tomorrow:

Our first Reading Buddies session will be going on in the library! Grade 6 and Grade 3 are teaming up this year.

The ‘Little Buddies’ benefit from:
  • hearing stories read-aloud (modeling of reading fluency, phrasing and expression)
  • having conversations with an older student about topics that interest and involve them (extending their vocabulary, oral language abilities)
  • having regular opportunities to practice familiar reading with 1:1 assistance
  • enjoying fun, positive experiences with ‘big kid’ who is now a recognizable face in the school community
The ‘Big Buddies’ benefit from:
  • further developing their own literacy skills
  • fostering leadership and problem-solving skills
  • improved self-confidence that comes from being looked-up to
  • a very real and important reason to be responsible, and an opportunity to be ‘caught’ (and praised) for positive behavior
  • bragging rights
Reading Buddies programs promote a higher interest and engagement in reading, improvement in social and communication skills, particularly for students learning English as a second language.  And, most importantly, it’s just FUN.

In Science today we will be reading "The Lorax" By Dr. Seuss talking about climate change and global warming, as an intro to our unit on how the growth of plants is affected by changes in the environment.

We will then explore The Life Cycle of Plants and plant our own seeds to observe over the next few weeks, I will try to remember to snap some photo's of our planting!

We also had our first Raz Kids session, so all the students know how to log in and use the program, I will be assigning the first reading for the weekend!

Jan 25th

Today we finished a read along titled "Those Shoes" by Maribeth Boelts, We did some text to self connections by relating the story to our own experiences. We talked about a time when they may have asked parents for something and were told it was too expensive and about helping out someone in need/someone less fortunate then ourselves.

We did some more Rural/Suburban/Urban exploration in our Social Studies class with a graphic organization sort in our table groups. We then watched a Brainpop Jr video about the physical/human characteristics of each of these communities and talked about jobs and recration activities that could be found in each.

**If time, please review the video with students on the weekend and help them pull out key information from the video**

In art, I will be showing the different Achievement Level standards in the Ontario Curriculum

Level 1

Level 2

Level 3

Level 4

Your child should be aiming for Level 3; Level 3 is at grade standard and means that your child is progressing as normal through all curriculum areas. These levels are not just for Art but for all subjects.

*I will be sending unfinished art home on Friday to be finished over the weekend, there will be no more in class time for this project*

*Please note that on Thursday, as the students are swimming, that you may pick them up by the pool area/Library entrance*

I have also set up a online classroom management system called Class Dojo, I will send a registration code home with the students, so that you can track their behaviour during class time and also take away/add points for work done at home!!! :D

Coming up this week!

We will be doing a writing activity with the 'Scaredy Squirrel" book content, and extending it into The Virtue Of The Month: Friendship with some friendship cards and comic strip making.

We will continue to practice sorting and classifying objects into categories and how that helps us organize data. We will interpret and discuss data that we sort and talk about what they have in common. Students will then take these self created data sorts and use it to make a bar graph using a 1-1 scale.

We will wrap the day up with our first Health lesson:
