Jan 25th

Today we finished a read along titled "Those Shoes" by Maribeth Boelts, We did some text to self connections by relating the story to our own experiences. We talked about a time when they may have asked parents for something and were told it was too expensive and about helping out someone in need/someone less fortunate then ourselves.

We did some more Rural/Suburban/Urban exploration in our Social Studies class with a graphic organization sort in our table groups. We then watched a Brainpop Jr video about the physical/human characteristics of each of these communities and talked about jobs and recration activities that could be found in each.

**If time, please review the video with students on the weekend and help them pull out key information from the video**

In art, I will be showing the different Achievement Level standards in the Ontario Curriculum

Level 1

Level 2

Level 3

Level 4

Your child should be aiming for Level 3; Level 3 is at grade standard and means that your child is progressing as normal through all curriculum areas. These levels are not just for Art but for all subjects.

*I will be sending unfinished art home on Friday to be finished over the weekend, there will be no more in class time for this project*

*Please note that on Thursday, as the students are swimming, that you may pick them up by the pool area/Library entrance*

I have also set up a online classroom management system called Class Dojo, I will send a registration code home with the students, so that you can track their behaviour during class time and also take away/add points for work done at home!!! :D

Coming up this week!

We will be doing a writing activity with the 'Scaredy Squirrel" book content, and extending it into The Virtue Of The Month: Friendship with some friendship cards and comic strip making.

We will continue to practice sorting and classifying objects into categories and how that helps us organize data. We will interpret and discuss data that we sort and talk about what they have in common. Students will then take these self created data sorts and use it to make a bar graph using a 1-1 scale.

Jan 19th Lesson

Hello!

From Thursdays Social Studies and Math class!

Students Listened to "The Little House" and drew a picture of different parts of the story as they listened. We then discussed as a group what the story was about and what happened to the house in the story. We did a Rural/Suburban/Urban comparison chart as a whole group and then students where given the Circle graph to represent the three different areas individual.

Student example:

We then did a mind map of what the word "community" meant. Then we looked it up on a wed dictionary and created a classroom definition.

This is an example of some of the Gallery Walk survey question activity we had. we've used the information gathered to create a bar graph and practice tallying the categories.

Jan 18th

I must apologize, I was going to take photo's from today's Math and graphing activities but of course it ran out of battery! We did an activity called a Gallery Walk, were students went from station to station answering some 'get to know you' questions. We then used these questions to discuss what they all had in common.  We created a Know/Learn chart and filled in the Know part; later we will fill in the Learn part after doing some whole group and small group Bar Graph creating with the data collected from the Gallery Walk.

We will be using the above vocabulary for our Data Management unit

The students then where given a problem from a 'Toy Company' that required them to work in small groups, to use data collecting to help them pick a new toy.

REMINDER:

1) Please purchase books from Sunway: 1 Art, 1 Math, 1 Science, 1 Mandarin, 2 Language with blank space, 2 with full page of lines

2) Malay Teacher would also like you to purchase a Malay-Engish dictionary

Jan 16th-18th- Welcome Students!

Welcome!

Hello, I am the new grade 3 teacher for Sunway International School. I am from Canada and I am excited to start Grade 3 learning!

The first day back, we will be doing some Icebreaker games to get to know each other.  Students will complete an 'All About Me' booklet and share with small groups.

We will be going over class rules and expectations and creating a co-operative classroom pledge.

We will then jump into some simple data management by graphing some information about our new class/classmates.

I will be reading a book titled "Scaredy Squirrel: Makes A Friend" By Mélanie Watt. We will then discussing as a class, the virtue of the month; Friendship. Our literacy focus will be making predictions about the text and making connecting by talking about how to be a good friend (this will be down in pairs)

I will be sending home a weekly Time Table for our 3B class! But just in case here it is!

Wednesday:

I will be reading a book titled "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids" By Carol McCloud. We will further explore the topic of friendship and have small group discussion on the kind of words and actions we should/should not do, in order to be good friend. They will share ideas with whole class and then we will create a positive word/action display for the classroom.

We will continue into data management and graphing activities, followed by some small group math centers.

The students will have their first session with the primary Music teacher and will finish off the day with a Visual Arts class.
